Hackers are now in full swing, tempting and luring us into parting with our cash and identity for an empty promise. Black Friday, known among the retail trade as the start of the holiday shopping season is also the start of the Hacker's busiest period. This year, the biggest concern among technology experts is web-borne malware.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is followed in marketing lingo by Cyber Monday. Both are big days for retailers and online fraudsters. Consumers should watch out for e-mails advertising incredible deals that seem too good to be true.
Emails purporting to be from Ebay, Amazon or other Specialist E-tailors hide the true website addresses that you are directed to visit through clickable links. Another trick is to send out (blast) emails to innocent internet users, advertising a hot product for far less than normal retailers. This years hot products will, in our opinion be electronic goods like the Nintendo Wii and quite possibly the Amazon Kindle, both of which look set to be sold out!

Reports indicate that this year fraud losses due to e-commerce will top the 3 and a half billion dollar mark. This is predominantly due to an increase in online users and those looking for hot deals on the web. It's also important to remember that websites at the top of Google, Yahoo or MSN may not be the safest domains. Tactics are widely used to get top rankings and the search engines don't vet websites for authenticity! Basically, buyer beware. If there isn't a phone number or valid trading address on the website, don't buy from it.

2006 Security Watch - What is this year going to have in store for us?

There is a lot going on in the information security space. 2006 looks to be an interesting year in these regards. Below are some things to watch for in 2006, some of them are good and, unfortunately, some aren’t.

First the good news:

- We are getting a lot more serious about our security. This has a lot of reasons behind it. For example, new privacy laws are mandating organizations to tighten their security. Look to see more consumer privacy laws passed in the coming year and more tightening of security systems.
- Authentication requirements are increasing. This is closing in large security holes. Corporations are requiring a great deal more of authentication to get into secure systems (this also is on the bad news side)

- There is a plethora of sophisticated programs to help us be more secure and they will continue to get better. Competition right now is strong in the security industry sparking a lot of innovation.

- ISPs are now taking on the responsibility to help us with our security. Take AOL's recent commercials as a good sign that others will follow the trend.

Now the bad news:

- Securing our networks is costing us. Most companies are globalizing their organizations and making them secure costs a lot of money. It will get worse before it gets better.

- Authentication requirements are increasing. This is getting claustrophobic. Corporations are requiring a great deal more authentication to get into secure systems (This is also on the good news side) Unfortunately, for the end user, it is one more thing to be unhappy about, not unlike airport security lines.

- Hackers are getting more sophisticated. For example, Botnets are becoming more complex and harder and harder to catch and stop. Do a search on botnets on the Internet. They really are causing a whole lot of problems, but it does not stop there. The number of viruses and malware out there is staggering.

- Spammers keep finding more creative ways to fill our email boxes. Don't look for this trend to stop anytime soon.

Facts about the new iPod video

The newest member of the iPod family is found everywhere nowadays. As people get to understand more and more the usage of this new device, the Apple Company gains more customers. Till now, the sales indicate the fact that the iPod video is one of the best sellers from the series which began back in 2001.
Some of the most important accessories that the new iPod video provides are the universal clock, the contact book and the various games. From the last model in 2004, the iPod video brought a new feature regarding the photo storage. Now, the iPod provides full size thumbnails for these pictures and, even more, they can be organized as preferred, in slide shows.
The dimensions of the newest iPod are bigger than the ones belonging to the last model. This is due to the fact that the new iPod is destined, besides others, for watching music videos or even full length movies, so the iPod presents a larger color screen (the screen size was modified to 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) diagonally, 0.5 inches (12.7 mm). The fact that the screen is bigger is a good thing, but the surface is easy to scratch, an aspect that is less favorable.

The new iPod has other improvements, too, especially concerning the life of the battery. This improvement basically means that the new iPod has 20 hours of battery life and taking into account the advantage of watching music videos, TV shows, cartoons, photos and other videos, this aspect is very relevant. Another advantage is the iTunes Music Store, which has over 2 million songs available for all tastes and ages, 2,000 videos, ABC or Disney TV shows. Downloading them is easy and it can be done directly. Even more, with the help of special cables the downloaded files can be easily seen on the TV. There is another variant for all these activities - you may use the universal dock and the remote control. The other quality features are the easy control, the video feature, but the flaws regard the interruption of the sound between the tracks is one thing that gets criticism.

Regarding the looks, the new iPod comes, as the previous iPod (the nano model of the 4th generation) in 2 colors, white and black, but it has a wide range of applications and improved features: Screen Lock applications, a smaller earphone, a thin slipcase, AC adapter and FireWire cable. Regarding the dimensions, the new iPod is 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.43 inches for the 30 GB version and 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.55 inches for the 60 GB version (which, in the case of the new video iPod model, are found at the same price on the market).

The latest member of the iPod series surprised the market in various ways: from the video capacities to the other evolved features (in comparison with the 2004 model) and from the style and looks to the wide and evolved spectrum of accessories that are available together with the new iPod video. The evolution of the iPod presents an increased interest in constantly improving this device and always considering the necessities of the target buyers. It is expected that the next generation of iPods to be even more evolved, with various changes in the video settings and more innovative accessories.

Options of an iPod video

The new iPod video, which is of a convenient shirt or pocket size, has many options and some of them are absolutely surprising. Apart from the usual options of the iPod – music player, photo viewer, and voice recorder – the new iPod video has several options that may seem revolutionary for some people or useless for others. These options make an iPod video first of all a video playback device, photo and music device. For example, it plays music videos, even TV shows or, a remarkable initiative – ABC hits like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives”. Even Pixar shorts and popular Disney are available for the new iPod video.
The new iPod video is a refined device with refined features for the interested customers. The new video features are very well thought out and displayed on a thinner iPod. Besides, the resolution is up to 320x240, fact that may represent an advantage in an era of other handheld video options. On the other hand, the new iPod video has better volume with no static or clipping when turned up to the maximum volume. You may also connect you iPod to the home or car stereo without worrying about the quality of the sound.
Another option concerns the fact that the new iPod video has a large color screen. Besides, the display is refined, as you may see the images even in bright indoor light or in the sunlight. Another aspect regards the battery life that may last 14 hours or even 20 – it depends on the model you choose.

The specialists suggest that the main use of the iPod video will be the short videos, funny elements taken from life. The argument for this fact is that the iPod videos are too small for being watched by too many people at the same time and require more attention than the audio programs. A possible disadvantage is the fact that many iPod videos may be used by teenagers for porn videos, fact that may help the porn industry to develop its programs and success.

Some other options may come immediately after the complete success of the presented ones. The great success may be ensured for the company and especially for this daring project without even having clear and certain proofs from the consumer market. Besides, the options on the new iPod video may be tempting for those who prefer not to mix the mobile with video options. This aspect may represent the next step in the video evolution although there are lots of skeptic opinions about these new trends in the television industry.

Another important aspect of the new options of the iPod video is the fact that you may encode video from a DVD. You may also connect the iPod video to a TV and for this operation you may need some items – an iPod compatible video, a video capable iPod and an A/V cable. The next operations concern your skills in selecting the right options on your video iPod: you should choose video setting from the menu, then you have to adjust the video playback style you need. Another step concerns the TV signal specific for your country. Special information regards the way you plug the red, yellow and white RCA plugs: the red one into TV yellow RCA jack, the yellow into the white one and the white into the red RCA jack.

From this point on you may select on your video iPod the movie, show or video music you want to watch. You have to select the option TV on and after a status screen appeared on your iPod, the video is played back on the TV. You may also control the volume levels from the iPod volume control.

Other options regard the photo display on the TV set using the AV cable, mentioning the fact that the photos are remarkably clear an maybe a little brighter than other displays.

Video iPod`s ads

IPod video was a surprising new device at its appearance, due to the new and exiting quality that it could offer: playing videos. Besides this, the iPods have known, since their appearance on the market, a constant evolution, which lead to the fact that the public and the potential customers had more and more expectations regarding this product. With a new offer and design, the new product iPod video had a series of new ads, some authentic and some suspicious, because of their fake or less real aspect.
Due to the fact that the product was not yet in stores and people didn’t expect such a product to appear, there were a number of teasing and controversial ads (regarding their authenticity) which appeared and circled on the Internet. By bringing a new and relevant feature to the device, such as the video feature, the potential customers were surprised by the evolution of the product and so, the ads purpose was established. One of these ads represents the iPod video in an unreal shape (meaning that the authentic iPod has other optical features and another design). The ad was very short, as it lasted only 15 seconds. The video begins with presenting some corners of the new device, which are revealed in a computerized manner.
This one side of the device turns and the other one presents a screen which played the most recent music video belonging to the band Black-Eyed Peas (Pump it). The music and rhythm were dynamic and fast and so were the characters, who were dancing while driving. Suddenly, the slogan Introducing the new hand held movie theatre appeared and shortly after, the phrase new hand held movie theatre was cut out and the new phrase new iPod appeared on the screen, resulting Introducing the new iPod.

The controversy around this ad is focused on the fact that the actual iPod video doesn’t have the same characteristics as the one in the ad: the actual device looks very similar to the 1st to 4th generation of iPods, meaning the screen is over the buttons, but the one revealed in the ad presented a very large screen, which completed one side of the device.

Still, there are many ads of the new iPod video which are, for sure, authentic. The main idea of these is the fact that music can be seen, as well, besides just being heard. This is why the Apple company opted for integrating famous artists in the ads for their product: one of the ads featured U2's Original of the Species from the Vertigo - Live From Chicago DVD and another two featured Eminem and Wynton Marsalis. The ads featuring these artist were much longer than the usual ones and they basically played famous songs, but not together with their videos; instead, the producers opted for some more authentic images illustrating performances of these artists, which would look natural and more spontaneous. The ads for this new product were focused on the video playing capabilities of the device and the producers wanted, at the same time, to symbolize the new range of possibilities that the new model of iPpod had to offer.

The main idea of the ads was clear, even though these 3 ads had very different targets. Based on the fact that the clients of the new device come from different backgrounds and are of different ages, the producers and the marketers managed to pick some artists that represent generations and symbolize best their tastes and lifestyle: Eminem stands for teens and hip hop music, Wynton Marsalis is representative for adults who like classical and jazz music and U2 is somewhere in between the other 2 opposite styles.

In parallel, the ads with the dancing silhouettes continued with more specified backgrounds, which were representing the video options. The iPod`s video ads show that the product has definitely evolved, has a more mature image and optimized new features.

Capabilities of the new iPod video

The capabilities of the new iPod video continue the developing process of the old capabilities – software, hardware and compatibility with other devices.

Concerning the software, it is well-known that the iPod in general and the iPod video in particular play MP3, audible audio book, WAV, M4A/AAC, protected AAC, AIFF and Apple Lossless audio file formats. Since the 5th generation iPods there is another possibility of playing m4v and mp4 MPEG-4 video file formats. Only non copy-protected WMA files may be copied to an iPod. Other formats are not possible to be played by the iPod and this is the case of FLAC and Ogg Vorbis formats.
Besides, the iPods are especially designed for matching the iTunes media library software. This online music store appeared in 2003 and it sells songs and it was thought exclusively for the iPod users and not for other portable music players. This may have contributed to the success both the iPods and the iTunes music store and to the great development and improvements of the iPod’s capabilities.
The software of the new iPod video has new features – personalized recommendations and video content that can be played on a Pc or transferred to the iPod. The software was upgraded to Version 6, fact that represents a development and a distinct achievement.
Concerning the hardware of the iPods one may say that the first generation iPods were recharged only through FireWire with the help of a small power adapter. The 4th generation iPods may have been charged over USB. The 5th generation iPod may be charged with the help of a dock connector allowing the FireWire cable to be plugged in for the recharge.

Compatibility of the iPods with Windows is the idea of Apple, realized in 2002, fact that contributed to the creation of a Windows version of iTunes in 2003. The iPods could be made to be compatible with a Macintosh and there is also an iPodLinux project.

Some additional features may be mentioned while speaking about the iPods in general and iPod video in particular. The iPods can display text files, fact which is very useful. There are also PDA calendars, some games that were interesting several years ago but they seem outdated nowadays. The games available on almost every iPod except the iPod shuffle are brick, parachute, solitaire, music quiz. The most interesting game is the music quiz, playing some fragments of some songs and waiting the user to identify the song from a list. The disadvantage of this game is that it uses a lot of battery power.

All these capabilities seem to be improved in the case of the new iPod video except the creation of other games or the introduction of new ones. This may be seen as a disadvantage, but if taking into account the fact that it is a case of a portable music player this aspect does not have such a great importance.

The innovation is of course the video capability, although the main features of the new iPod stress on great improvements in the image and sound quality. The video image is surprisingly smooth and in this way may replace the skeptical attitudes with joyful exclamations.

Although it is not the first attempt of bringing video on a portable handheld device, this achievement seems to be the most successful. This success is due to a lot of required work and complicated changes in the software and hardware as well. In a way or another, Apple seems to be the champion in creating special portable devices and maybe some other steps will be taken in the development of the small video portable devices. In this way, maybe a special compatibility with more devices may be developed, ensuring other periods of great success. Other online stores may appear and develop in the tradition of the iTunes music store. Due to iPods from the Apple Company legal content of the downloaded and paid music or TV shows, episodes or other materials is ensured.

Advantages and disadvantages of the iPod video

The new iPod video became famous due to its huge memory and the capacity of playing video, due to its slim design and longer life battery. Still, there are voices that point out some disadvantages and highlight different negative aspects.
Taking into account that there are few perfect things made by the human hand, these aspects may be used by the iPod video creators for further improvements. Therefore, the customer’s reviews are very important and the suggestions may be really taken into account.
The fact that the screen is bigger is great, but the surface is easy to scratch, aspect that is more in the cons category. Although the image is excellent and the clarity screen may be easily compared with the TV set’s screen quality, there are still some problems with freezing video images. There is a great achievement the fact that the light, sun or other previous obstacles are annihilated, but another important problem is the unresponsiveness in some cases.

The dimensions of the new iPod video are great, but there is no way you may watch it with more than several persons. Anyway, it was designed for personal not collective needs and you may still share your photo album and music or video music preferences with one person. The flat screen is large enough to enjoy your favorite videos.

Although the life battery is longer, the complaints concern the short battery life for video. And this complaint may be balanced by the fact that the video is played with no flaw. The pros of the new iPod video are considered the cool look, the impressive number of features, the great organization of the music menu so that you may even rank your favorite songs. The cons of the new iPod video are considered the absence of FM option, the fact that no cradle is included, the impossibility of connecting the iPod video to the computer and the cost.

The amazing new features concern the sound quality – it is clearer and stronger with a bass that is stronger articulated, the sound is also louder than that of the previous generations. The other good features are the easy control, the video feature is classified with “great”, but the flaws regard the interruption of the sound between the tracks, being blanked out. There are still other suggestions regarding the battery life, taking into account the amount of music that the new iPod video has.

The pros may be gathered together pointing out the thin and attractive enclosure with a great display, the best sound, 15-20 hours of music, new clock and the time in other parts of the world. The cons highlight the incompleteness of the video integration that suggests the experimental project aspect, absence of the new games, no changes in the interface, the smaller screen than expected especially for video features edition. Another disadvantage concerns the slow transfer of photos direct from the camera.

Some critics point out the fact that the design and the features of the new iPod video may be seen from different perspectives. Therefore, the complaints and the satisfaction may be contradictory. These aspects may be seen from a movie lover perspective, an audiophile or photographer or even from a simple consumer with no great expectations. That is why you may find musician’s reviews or video addicted reviews that are in contradiction. You may decide in which category you may be situated for deciding if the new iPod video is worth the money or not.

From the same point of view, you may say that as a music player the new iPod video has superior quality of sound. As a screen for the photo album, the clarity of the screen may win the competition with any TV set’s screen. As a movie player, the iPod video is below the expectations, but it may be considered a great step in the video technology.

Email Recovery-Good Software Can Fix Your Lost Mail Trouble

Emails are an essential medium of communication in the fast track world of today. Be it for our personal or for business purposes, emails are indispensable. Loss of emails can bring about anything from a minor loss to devastation, depending on the need of the user. Hence, data recovery vis a vis emails is an absolute must, especially if emails are essential communication tools for ones business. Data recovery softwares are a viable and dependable option when it comes to effective email recovery.
Data recovery softwares function differently for different types of files, which are:

* Outlook PST Files
* Outlook Express DBX Files
* Web Mail

Outlook PST Files

PST Files are very complex. So, once data is lost from these files, it is important to recover the data as well as repair them. To recover data the files themselves, these softwares are very helpful. Good software is equipped to repair and restore data from damaged or corrupted Microsoft Outlook file.

Microsoft Outlook stores email messages, contacts, notes and folders on the local drive as a .pst file. The Outlook recovery software scans the damaged .pst file and extracts and saves information in a new usable .pst file, enabling PST Recovery.

The key features of good PST files recovery software are:

* Providing PST Recovery from folders, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes.
* Repairing even the password protected files
* Restoration of formatting from RTF and HTML messages
* Recovering data from encrypted files
* Providing support to repair .pst files.
* Recovering deleted email attachments.

Outlook Express DBX Files

Good recovery software can scan, extract and save emails form .dbx files in which Microsoft Outlook Express stores messages and folders in the local drive. It should also be allowed to retrieve accidentally deleted messages from the Deleted Items folder in Outlook Express. The .dbx files also need to be repaired so as to enable smooth functioning subsequently.

The key features of good DBX files recovery software are:

* Providing Mail Recovery from Outlook Express dbx files.
* Providing deleted email recovery of dbx files from corrupt media, such as floppy disks, Zip disks, CD ROMs, etc.
* Provides Mailbox repair of dbx files.
* Support to repair dbx files within a size limitation.
* Recovering deleted email attachments.
* Enabling the recovered messages to be opened directly in MS Outlook Express.
* Enabling recovered messages to be saved in the *.eml file format on any (including network) disks visible by the host operating system.
* Enabling message source view.

Web Mail

In order to access a web based email program like Yahoo or Hotmail, one has to use the Internet Browser to log onto a remote computer which stores the emails. When mails from it are deleted, they cannot be recovered. Hence, data recovery software is required to retrieve that data. It is a very complicated procedure, and only messages that have been opened already can be retrieved using a good software.

As the old and cliched adage goes, prevention I better than cure. So, it is advised that a lot of care be taken. After all, loss of important mails can spell disaster for your business.

Data Recovery for Less

If you feel as though you professional and personal lives are at stake if you lose all the data that you have stored on your computer, then it may be time to think about investing
in data recovery.

Believe it or not, only 2% of the billions of gigabytes of information there is out there is
backed up and even less has any chance of being fully recovered.

We, however, are quite certain that a far greater proportion of that data is of value to someone out there and certain that that someone out there would be very upset if that data were lost.

And therein lies the dilemma, in that when that someone goes out to protect their valuable commodity, they hire these big expensive firms that charge thousands of dollars to back up your data because they know that your data is one of your most valuable commodities.

The end result of which is these firms that value the job of recovering your data not on the amount of work, but on how much personal and professional value you hold in your data.

And because professionals tend to hold their data in such high regard, they have no hesitation when it comes to shelling out whatever some big firm asks for to protect their valuable data.

There are, however, much more affordable alternatives that cut the costs of your data recovery

If your data is particularly sensitive or just so massively important your professional and personal life would be ruined if it were ever to be lost, maybe a reputable firm is the answer and costs should be negligible.

If you are, on the other hand, an everyday computer user of whom the loss of your data would result in a big inconvenience rather than an end to your professional life, you might want to consider the use of data recovery software.

Because as much as there are firms that are willing to take your extra dollar based on your desperation rather than the actual work involved to set up your data recovery, there are a number of very affordable data recovery software of which are just as reliable as hiring a firm to do the work.

And if you have a particular flair for network technology, the data recovery that you set up on your own will have the same reliability than a firm but for hundreds, maybe thousands less.

Electronic-Data-Interchange, or EDI is a method of computer to computer exchange of various types of information. While many people know of the internet and the World Wide Web as communication methods, the electronic-data-interchange is much similar. It allows the transfer of data from one place to the next with very minimal need for people to get involved.

Today, the Electronic-Data-Interchange is regulated. It offers specific interchange methods that transpire overseas and nationally as standard bodies when it comes to moving information and business transactions from one place to the next. For example, this is the most common form of communication in the process of purchasing goods and services. Communication for the location to the financial institution to deliver a message of the amount of funds required, in this case, is what data will be transferred.

Does It Worth To Backup Emails From Clients Like Outlook Express?

How often do people loose their email data?
Is this important to backup your email client before loosing important emails?
Are you thinking it wont happen to you?

Well, for those who use an email client and loosing their emails is one of the worst nightmares. Unfortunately this situation is quite probable.

There are several causes for this:
- Hard disk failure
- Viruses and Trojans
- Windows crashes
- Some time un-expected things

Hard Disk can fail from several reasons: logical problems like bad partitions, hardware problems caused by dropping them or something on them, or, sometimes they just stop functioning. You can use several data recovery tools like GetDataBack or Acronis, which might save your day. But you might not be able to get back any byte.

Viruses are increasing their numbers day by day. Its hard to keep up even for the big players like Symantec or Kaspersky. They reduced the response time for a new virus, but if you are unlucky, the virus crashes your computer before you can apply the antivirus.

Well, we all know how reliable Windows is. There is no person that can say he never saw a blue screen. Because most of the email clients store email, account and settings data in My documents, Program files or in Windows registry. When you reinstall the operating system you loose them all. Even Microsoft CEO Bill Gates acknowledged that they counted 5 percent of total Windows based computers to crash twice every day.

The best way to count those situations is to backup emails on a CD or another hard disk. People who know a little about Windows and computers can do it by hand. Outlook Express is still the most used email client.

If you want to backup Outlook Express by hand, you have to save registry keys and DBX files. Saving messages, signatures and the address book can be done within the email client, but for settings you have to search through Windows registry. It can be pretty difficult to do it for a beginner.

What it cannot do is backing up Outlook Express and restoring to Pegasus Mail for instance. Synchronization can take place between different instances of the same email client.

It can be used to move emails from one computer to another. For instance if you own a laptop and a PC, you can transfer emails between them. Furthermore, you can backup Outlook Express from Windows98 and restore it to Windows XP.

Adolix Outlook Express Backup has a wizard mode for beginners, but the most experienced users can use Standard mode for more speed. It costs only $24.95 and I think worth for too much.

Its pretty clear that anyone can loose emails. So backing up your email client is essential, but you have to decide whether to do it by hand or to purchase a tool like Adolix Outlook Express Backup.

CAD conversion and CAD drafting-giving wings to imagination

CAD Conversion and CAD Drafting in literal term would mean computer aided designing and drafting. CAD conversion finds application for mechanical, architectural, engineering, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, architectural, residential, commercial and 2D and 3D drawings. The drawings and documents cater to homeowners, engineers, architects and consultants. The drawings or sketches can be used for recreating two or three-dimensional models as per standards (AIA or any other standard).

CAD drafting techniques primarily include AutoCAD, MicroStation, VectorWorks, etc. The applications for the same include:
1. Architectural CAD drafting for landscape architectural and construction drawings.
2. CAD drafting for HVAC, electrical and plumbing drawings.
3. CAD drafting for mechanical fabrication and structural steel detailing.

Cad conversion is being widely publicized on the web. The key consumers of CAD conversion are architects, contractors, engineers and a host of other industries.

Use of Raster to vector (R2V) for converting architectural, mechanical and various technical drawings, maps, archive drawings, schematic diagrams even photos and other types of line artwork from raster to different vector formats is a universal practice. R2V caters to the diverse CAD drafting needs.

3D modeling services for architectural, interior, industrial and web designing needs are becoming important day by day. Converting hand-drawn sketches, design concepts and drawings into impressive 3D models play a vital role in the competitive market of today. Paying attention to shape and texture in great detail and customized stereoscopic 3D models using AutoCAD, ADT, MDT (Mechanical Desktop), Catia, SolidWorks, etc. are also pivotal for success of CAD. The options are unlimited.

Protecting Your Laptop with 12 Simple Laptop Security Steps

While computer operating systems today are much more secure than just two years ago, there is still some user management necessary. These operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows XP are becoming more and more "user friendly" from a security standpoint. Many potential security problems are locked down by default and the user generally does not need to be concerned with implementing them.

However, computer security ("cyber-security"), in general, is still somewhat reactive. Good examples of being reactive are the Anti-Virus products on the market today, for example Norton Utilities by Symantec. While they try to anticipate new types of attacks, they still can not effectively predict specific attacks, because the creators of such attacks are effectively on the "offensive."

Most laptop computers today use Microsoft's Windows XP, SP2 as the operating system. This release has some of the best security features currently available for a computer, but they need to be checked or in some cases implemented by the user. A good example of this is an anti-virus product installed on your laptop. Not only does the Anti-virus software need to be enabled, but the Microsoft XP settings may need to be changed to accommodate the anti-virus changes. It is the user's responsibility to make sure this protection in enabled.

These checklists outline the steps you should take to reach a baseline of security with Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional computers, either on their own or as part of a Windows NT or Windows 2000 domain. Additional information about these checklists can be found on the Microsoft Website. Just search on the Microsoft site using the term "security."

Important: The purpose of these checklists is to give instructions for configuring a baseline level of security on Windows XP computers. This guide does not provide a complete list of all security features provided in Windows XP or how to use them. A complete list of new security features available in Windows XP is available on the Microsoft Web site.
Windows XP Professional Configuration - 12 Steps

1. Verify that all disk partitions are formatted with NTFS
2. Protect file shares
3. Use Internet Connection sharing for shared Internet connections
4. Enable Internet Connection Firewall
5. Use software restriction policies
6. Use account passwords
7. Disable unnecessary services
8. Disable or delete unnecessary accounts
9. Make sure the Guest account is disabled
10. Set stronger password policies
11. Set account lockout policy
12. Install antivirus software, antishareware software and updates

These security tips are suggested by Microsoft to provide a baseline level of security for your computer. Additional security steps that are very important to protect your laptop and desktop computers include:

- Keep your data safe and backed up
- Use the Internet safely
- Protect your networks and servers, especially when wireless access points are used

Microsoft has a tool called the Baseline Security Analyzer that is excellent. It helps detect security threats and is a must have tool for anyone interested in security for a laptop, desktop or computer network.

Laptop Theft

Another very real security threat to your laptop is theft. According to Safeware Insurance, "387,000 laptops were stolen in the US in the year 2000 - versus 319,000 in 1999." The FBI notes that "over 98% of stolen laptops are never recovered." Also "notebook theft is the 2nd most prevalent computer crime, following virus related offenses" according to a CSI/FBI PC Crime and Security Survey.

When your laptop is stolen, you not only lose the hardware, you lose the data on the hard drive. This happened to my daughter, an architecture student at the University of New Mexico. She lost much of her portfolio of architecture projects in her first two years because of this theft. As with most laptop owners, some of the data was backed up and some was not. We replaced the laptop but the sense of violation and loss was still there. She still misses that Fujitsu P2046 laptop, as she really liked it.

Think what would happen to you business or home records if your laptop was stolen. Even it you have it backed up and replace the computer, you will probably feel violated by the theft. There is also a psychological cost that is often not thought of until it happens to you. You would have no idea of where or if your data on the laptop was stored on some criminal's computer waiting for the opportune time to steal your identity, or pull some other crime against you. You would not know if one of the many laptop drives sold on web auction sites was the one out of your laptop, or even if that laptop "just like yours" being auctioned was in fact yours.

As you can see, laptop security encompasses a number of things. Many of these things are not really very difficult or even very technical. They do take some thought, planning and often some research to find out the best way to counter some of the threats that are out there today.

The good part is that there are many security resources which can be very helpful and useful available on the internet today. Many software and hardware suppliers, like Microsoft, and Dell for example, have extensive security information, articles, whitepapers and books available. Many county, state and federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland security, FBI and CERT, also have extensive security suggestions and information available for protecting your laptop, desktop computer, and computer network.

Checking To See If You Have Wireless Capability

Do you know if your new computer already has wireless capability? Many new computers have the built-in software and connections in order for you to set up a wireless network. These wireless networking devices are so inexpensive that the manufacturers of the computers include them as part of the package and can be found on the system specification list.

Like most people, however, you may not even know how much memory your computer has, let alone whether it arrived already wireless-enabled. This is especially true if you don't know what wireless networking is. It's easy to ignore this detail in the specifications that come with the computer and to fail to take the time to set it up and get it working. Let's look at some things to look for if you want to check your computer's wireless capabilities.

Intel Centrino.

If you own a laptop that comes with something called 'Intel Centrino mobile technology', this is what you're looking for! Unfortunately, manufacturers of computers are not good at explaining what this technology is or does. Quite simply, it means that your laptop has wireless networking built right in; you don't need to do a thing! Intel Centrino is a term used in marketing that stands for a combination of the Intel Pentium M processor and Intel's Pro/Wireless card.

Your computer should have an 'Intel Centrino' sticker on it somewhere if it is enabled with Intel Centrino. If you don't see this type of sticker, you can also check the name of your processor by right-clicking the My Computer icon in the Start Menu (or on your desktop) and clicking on "Properties" from the menu. Look at the wording following the word "Computer" in this section. It should tell you if it has the wireless feature.

Intel Centrino technology has the capability of increasing the life of your computer's battery and allows computers to be smaller in size. If you didn't buy an Intel Centrino laptop but your laptop has a free card slot, adding wireless capabilities will be no problem.

Desktop Computers.

Desktop computers come with wireless capabilities, too. If you're not sure whether or not your desktop computer has a wireless connection, turn it around and look at the back of the computer. If a wireless connection is present, you can generally see a small aerial antenna sticking out of the back of the computer near the bottom of the computer.

If you don't see anything there, it's still possible that you have a wireless device in the computer, especially if the computer is relatively new. Unless you're a computer expert, don't open the back of your computer to determine if it has wireless capabilities. Instead, you should probably try and figure it out using Windows.

Checking in Windows.

You can easily check your computer's wireless capabilities by going into Windows' Device Manager. You must first right-click My Computer and choose Manage from that menu. Now click on "Device Manager".

In device manager, you will be able to see a list of the different devices you have or would be able to have on your computer. Look under 'Network adapters'. Anything that uses the words '10/100' or 'Ethernet' is a normal network connection and isn't related to wireless connectivity. Anything else may be a wireless device.

If you think you have a wireless device but note that it has a yellow warning sign next to its name in the Device Manager, click its name to find out what is wrong with the device. Windows should be able to let you know why the device is not working. The computer may also suggest that you go into its troubleshooter program. Try doing that before trying anything else.

The problem could be a driver problem. In that case, insert the drivers CD that came with your computer. If you can't find the drivers CD, you can always find the drivers online. In order to do this, you should look on the website of the computer's manufacturer. From there, you can try searching for the particular name of the wireless device in Device Manager.

Unfortunately, it could turn out that you don't have a wireless device after all. That's too bad. On the bright side, it is much better to learn that now than it would be to buy wireless equipment and then realize you couldn't run it on your computer. In any event, even if you did find a wireless device in one of your computers, you may decide that you need even more wireless capability. Fortunately, wireless technology is getting cheaper all the time!

Finding Cheap Computer Deals to Upgrade Your Computer

It seems that the time that it takes for computers to become obsolete is shortening more than ever. If you go out and purchase a top-of-the-line computer, it is very likely that in less than six months it will no longer be considered top-of-the-line. If you currently have a computer and you want it to be able to perform more functions, you don't have to get rid of it and spend a lot of money on a new system. You can simply purchase components to upgrade your computer. If you seriously consider upgrading your computer, now is a perfect time to do so. As with computers, prices of computer components are at an all-time low. Depending on they type of specifications you're after, you can spend as little as three hundred dollars to update your desktop or laptop computer.
Finding all the components you need to upgrade your own computer system is as easy as visiting findcheapcomputers.com. This website features detailed information about parts and includes a buyer's guide to make buying your components a snap. The first task that you need to perform to upgrade your computer system is to make a list of the computer's specifications. If you're not sure what specs you want the system to have, you can consider what you will do most with the computer and then generate a list of specifications. People typically choose to upgrade their existing computer systems because it does not include a particular component to enable them to perform a particular task.

A processor is an important component in your computer. Whether or not you should upgrade your processor depends on the tasks you will perform with the computer and the type of processor that currently exists in your computer. If the system you are planning to upgrade does not use one of the fast processors on the market, you may want to invest in a motherboard bundle that includes a motherboard, CPU, and fan. These bundles generally cost less than if you were to buy the parts separately. Of course, you could purchase an Intel Celeron with a speed of 2.6 gigahertz or an AMD Athlon 2700+. Both of these processors are sufficient for general computer use as well as browsing the Internet and gaming.

In addition to the processor, you will probably want to upgrade your system with memory, a graphics card or video card, a monitor, and keyboard and pointing device. Finding cheap computer deals of these components should be easy since activities that require high-quality video such as gaming are very popular. The important thing to remember when shopping for these components is that you need to make sure they are compatible with your system. For example, an AGP graphics card is an excellent choice if you plan to do a significant amount of gaming because it processes graphics faster. However, your motherboard will need to have an AGP slot. If you're not sure which components are most compatible, the website findcheapcomputers.com features information about computer components that are not only compatible with most systems, but that are also cheap.

Buying A Notebook For College

Every year, before schools and college institutions begin their classes, students from around the country visit department stores and major electronics chains in an effort to get all those necessities that will allow them to complete successfully their studies. So, if you have recently been accepted to college and you are not exactly sure which your computing needs will be, buying a notebook computer is not a luxury purchase, but actually a necessity. In fact, anyone who has to cover frequent travel concerns, from college students to frequent business travelers, should possess a laptop, given the fact that it provides a mobile and light-weight computing experience for computer users around the world.
Recent research indicates that laptops are in fact used extensively as people need to own computer systems that are as mobile as they are. Buying an effective machine that can also be easy to carry around has increased considerably the laptop sales over the last decade, considering the lower manufacturer and assembly costs. Deals between hardware developers and software engineers have resulted in improved notebook systems that incorporate the ability of them being transferred easily from one place to another, as well as being able to compute much more than the main software functions, like reading and composing emails, operating spreadsheets, or using word processing applications. In fact, whether one needs to take work from one office location to another or do some work while onboard, today's laptops can accomplish almost any task.

But if you are still contemplating on whether or not you actually do need a laptop to perform your computer-related college work, it is useful to consider the vast capabilities of these travel-ready devices as well as your current needs and ability to operate them. Owning a highly portable workstation can provide you with entertainment, productivity and ease of use. Forget about long messy cords and mouse pads. Easy to navigate by just using your fingers, today's laptop models need no more than their rechargeable batteries or just an outlet to connect to their AC adapter and you are good to go.

Listening to music, playing games, watching videos, or writing a paper has never been easier. Laptop computers allow college students to manage their daily busy schedules instead of loosing time and effort. Some models offer screens that are only visible to the person that seats directly across them, eliminating the chances of one being able to visibly access your files and folders. Headphones and microphones, as used with desktop publishers are used to provide an efficient but considerate experience. Keep in mind that most of the available models come with software applications already in place making Internet browsing or working on a project a simple and easy process of starting up the machine. Finally, since laptop computers have become a mainstream device, many affordable models are offered in electronic superstores or are available to be ordered directly from the laptops manufacturers' websites.

Does Santa Have a Wireless Laptop?

Kids these days say the darndest things, so it was only a matter of time before someone asked the big question. "Mommy, does Santa have a wireless laptop?"

The answer: Maybe not. Keep reading to find out some of the biggest hurdles that travelers this holiday season have to overcome when using a wireless laptop.

1. Weight. A laptop (plus accessories) starts to feel heavy very quickly. And who really needs MORE luggage to carry around?

2. Security risk. To you, it's a laptop computer. To a thief, it's a bag of easy money. (About $1000). And that bag is something you have to guard every second of your vacation.

3. Power supply problems. You'll need a different power adaptor plug for each country you visit. And depending on your laptop power supply cable, you may also need a step-up / step-down voltage transformer.

4. Connection complications. You'll need to find a way of connecting to the Internet. If your laptop is suitably equipped and you can find a local hotspot, you can take advantage of wireless Internet access. Otherwise you're stuck with dial-up modem access, whichmeans a choice between:- using your existing ISP's local call number in the country you're visiting (provided your ISP has a local number! AOL and Compuserve generally do.), making a long-distance telephone call to your regular
dial-up number back home or signing up with a local ISP (rarely practical in the
short-term)

5. Telephone socket trouble Different countries have different types of telephone
sockets. If you're planning on connecting via dial-up access, you'll have to bring a suitable telephone adaptor plug. You'll also need a digital signal tester to test for higher voltage digital telephones lines. Otherwise you could end up frying your modem and possibly the motherboard too.

6. Extra insurance cover. It's highly unlikely your travel insurance policy extends to laptop computers. You'll therefore need to arrange separate specialist insurance cover, which isn't cheap.

7. You're on vacation! Do you really want your office with you on vacation? Aren't you supposed to be getting away from it all?

So does Santa lug around his wireless laptop with his list of good and boys names on it? Probobly not, it would much easier to have it on a palm pilot or heck even pen and paper! And if Santa isn't going to bother with lugging it around, why the heck would you?

A Traveler's Guide to Laptop Security

A Traveler's Guide to Laptop Security
By John Gontowicz
The facts:
-More than 1,700 laptops are lost or stolen every day. That is more than 620,050 a year.
-97% of them are never recovered, according to the FBI.
-Data stored on the devices - customer lists, financial data, and correspondence - is critical.
-The equipment itself -- laptops, Blackberry's, PDAs, LCD monitors, cell phones - are prime items for theft and they are expensive to replace.
-Professional thieves are not interested in the laptop, only its resale value.
Below are the top fifteen tips for protecting your laptop:
1. When you are travelling with a laptop please carry the laptop with you. Many incidences have happened where laptops were stolen from baggage checked in at airports because the traveler did not want to carry the extra weight.
2. Do not leave your laptop or carrying case in plain view when travelling by car.
3. Protect your laptop from the environment. A sudden change in temperature can crack the display.
4. When using a carrying case pick a bag that does not look like a computer bag. I always see fashionable business people carrying laptops in expensive cases. Those cases say - "Laptop! Laptop! Steal me!" Please watch your computer bag at all times.
5. An unsecured laptop computer is very susceptible to data theft, especially if you use it in wireless locations.
6. Passwords are needed for laptop computers.
7. Laptops are pretty attractive for thieves. A number of companies sell software that silently phones home when it's eventually reconnected to a network after the unit is stolen.
8. Turn off the boot (start-up) sequence on the laptop and have it start using the hard drive.
9. Lock up the laptop. This is pretty obvious, but it is so often overlooked.
One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to secure your mobile PC is to use a security cable or lock to attach your laptop to a stationary object. If you must leave your unlocked laptop behind while you are at a hotel, put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door.
10. Make sure that you use Internet Security, spyware prevention, and anti-virus software.
11. Make sure you backup all of your data onto a CD, external drive, another PC, or an Internet service.
12. Security experts claim that you should engrave your name on a laptop because it would be harder for a thief to fence it.
13. You might want to consider buying insurance for your laptop. Many homeowners' insurance policies don't cover computers.
14. Never leave access numbers or passwords in your carrying case. Keeping your password with your laptop is like keeping the keys in your car.
15. Use a screen guard. These guards help prevent people from peaking over your shoulder as you work on sensitive information in a public place.
If you follow these basic guidelines and some common sense, you don't have to give up yours.

Software Tools for Comparison of Images

Unless you are an expert software and computer systems guru, compare images tools is not something an everyday person thinks about. This tool is another way to protect your data from leaking and keeping your data safe. The first thing a person needs to do is decide their specific needs for this type of software. Microsoft, and PDF files all have these capabilities. If you are looking for more in-depth comparison tools, then these tools are available. The questions you need to ask yourself is what is your intention, and what do you need to accomplish? Do you need to compare two or more folders and find out what files have been changed, altered or deleted? If that's the case you'll need a more specific type of program.
There are tools available that will allow you to see files and folders side by side on your desktop. They also allow you to synchronize files, replicate folders, perform backups and do file and folder comparisons. These programs will allow you to compare source codes which will keep file and folders in sync, and compare program output and validate copies of your files. The side by side view makes it very easy to spot differences among the files. Comparison of files based on size timestamp and cyclical redundancy check is another way to check and compare folders and files.
These software programs work with and between computers. The software works on comparison of any of the following combinations, and computers. Such as laptop, desktop, workstation, server over network LAN, WAN, VPN, USB, and with any type of storage media including external Hard Disk, Zip disk, USB flash drive, CD-RW, DVD, NAS Network attached storage. No matter what size of data you manage, from a large server with hundreds of gigabytes, to a single computer these data comparison image tools are very helpful.
The other type of software that may need a special comparison tool is your image collection. It's very hard to remember all of your images and remove duplicates manually. Image comparer automates the process of finding duplicates. Image comparer looks for fully identical images but also images that resemble each other. After use you will get a list of image pairs with similarity percentage, then you have the opportunity to delete all duplicates, with less quality with minimal mouse clicks; thus producing a great collection with unique images.
So, data image comparison tools are another way to protect your data, and keep it safe. There are many companies that have this software available, and many prices. Before buying I would suggest you talk to an expert to discuss your specific needs, and your specific computer operating system. The software available is quite numerous, and protecting your files and folders is important, for businesses, and for the single user who uses his computer nearly everyday. Data protection is the game, and comparison tools is one way of protecting files.

The Importance of Backing Up Your Computer

If you are a computer owner, there is definitely one thing that you need to be very concerned about. This is making backup copies of all of your computer files and programs. After all, if your computer is hit with a virus of any sort that threatens to destroy it, you will not lose valuable information.
How can you lose your files?
There are many things that can happen that can cause you to lose your computer files. Not only can your computer be hit by a bad virus, irritating spyware, or malware, but other unfortunate circumstances can also occur. For example, a lightening storm could short circuit your computer, if it is not protected by a power surge. This could wipe your computer out, or make it entirely unusable. The same thing holds true in the event of a power surge. Why, a simple child playing around with your computer can even do a great deal of damage! This is why it is in your best interest to keep backup files of everything that is important to you.

What types of files should you backup?
The types of computer files that you should backup are completely up to you. It all depends on what files are the most important and valuable to you. Most people typically find the following types of files to be rated high on their list of valuable files: bank records and finances, work projects, email address books, digital photographs, software, music, or other files downloaded from the Internet, Internet Explorer bookmarks, and Outlook calendars.

How can you backup your computer files?
There are a variety of ways to backup your computer files. The most basic way is to backup your files once a week or once a month (depending on how much you use your computer) by burning your important information on a CD. If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive to do the burning, you could always purchase an external hard drive to put the files on. External hard drives come in a multitude of memory sizes. You can get one that is small enough to fit on your keychain. The price range for external hard drives varies. You can get an external hard drive for as little as twenty dollars, or for as much as a few hundred dollars. The memory space and compactness will often determine the price. External hard drives are typically plugged into your computer using the USB port.

Where should you keep your computer's backup files?
Once you have backed up your computer, where should you keep the files that are on a CD, external hard drive, or other device? The answer is simple: somewhere safe and sound! It may even be a good idea to back up your computer two different ways and then store at least one of the backups in a safe. It pays to have a safe copy of your files. It is always better to be safe than sorry!

Work at Home Ware: Tips For Computer Home Businesses

The owner of a home business that uses a computer would do well to learn her or his way around the hardware and software. This can make a more efficient computer home business system, saving time and money. The first step to a more efficient computer system for your home is to update your PC or laptop's software and hardware on a regular basis. This will keep your computer system a state of the art product.

Updating software is a breeze, with most computer systems and software systems working hand in glove to prompt you to download the upgrades and a one-click installation that, with typical broadband speed, will complete in less than a minute. Some software programs upgrade in the background without your even being aware of it or even noticing any system slow down while you use your computer to work at your home business.

Hardware upgrades are a little harder to keep track of. A business owner who is less than a geek should find a beginning level computer magazine that will tell the owner the latest products as well as their features and uses. Handy peripherals come along brand new just about every day. Things like Web cams and CD burners can help facilitate a home business with the computer.

Getting online without any interruption - either through broadband or DSL - is important. A home business owner wouldn't want a consumer getting a busy signal when it's time to call and buy, nor would she or want to spend quality sales or marketing time waiting for a home business computer to upload.

You have to be a security expert but you have a complete understanding of the basics of the threats to the computer system you depend on to keep the business up and running. As a business owner you should understand the meaning of such threats as viruses, Trojan horses, worms, phishing and spoofing. Virus protection, and other common security software is a must for a home business computer. While the most common security products are Norton and MacAfee there are some free security products that are excellent protection as well - AVG, SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware.

The owner of a home business computer can save a lot of time, energy and repair fees by knowing the up to date ins and outs of computer maintenance and troubleshooting.

How To Connect To A Wired Network At Home, Work, Or School

Connecting to a wired Network requires you to do several things. Read the instructions so they can be easier to understand as you perform the task step by step. If you are in school or just have several computers in your home and need to connect them all to a wired network you will first plug the Ethernet cable into your computer and into the network port in the wall or in a mini hub.

Turn the computer on and open your web browser. From there you should be redirected to a registration page. Follow the sign up steps on the screen. Restart your computer and you should be good to go. Many colleges and schools have this system set up for students and teachers so they can be connected to the internet while in their dorms, classrooms, or other locations round the campus.

The necessity for internet service and computers in schools seems to be much greater today because computers are a wave of the future. They are used in every business today and the necessity will only increase so it is very important that everyone learn how to use the computer and to use the computer to write essays, term papers, etc. Setting up a computer and getting connected to the Internet can be a daunting task if you are not familiar with a computer.

There are new technological devices being introduced everyday so it can be very stressful if you know nothing about it. It may be a good idea to get a friend or professional computer expert help you to make sure you can be connected. There are a lot of technical terms used that can be very hard to understand if you are not knowledgeable about a computer.

If in doubt, get some help from someone who knows what they are doing. It is better to ask for help than to mess something up and have it cost you more in the long run. It is not shameful to ask for help. Most people do not know all of the tech words or their meanings when it comes to the computer and network. That is why some people go to school just to learn all about the computer. There is a need for educated computer experts so they can help those who do not understand all of that technical stuff. There are more people who do not understand it than those who do. We are all learning everyday and will not stop learning because new advances in technology will not allow it. It is an ongoing education we all need if we are going to be able to keep up. We all can learn from each other.

Discount Computers - Get Computers At Unbelievably Low Prices

A discount computer is a low cost computer with all the same features and software as a more expensive computer. Obviously the greatest benefit to a laptop that is glaringly apparent is the mobility. This allows you to always be able to take your computer with you to work, school, on vacation, etc. At the same time this portability also allows anyone else the ability to walk off with your laptop as well. If this happens, not only are you out a computer but you have also lost all the data you had on it as well so security is a concern.

Another issue is the price difference. While prices have come down, there will still be a good disparity in the price of a laptop to a comparable desktop so you have to weigh that out as well. The difference is usually $400 or $500. Do you need the mobility enough to pay the difference in price?

Another concern with purchasing a laptop is the availability of parts and how upgradeable the unit is. Don't buy some off brand laptop that you won't be able to buy parts for and don't buy one that you can't upgrade later.

A big issue for me is the size of the screen, yeah size matters. If you get a laptop with a small screen you will be aggravated, trust me. I have a 17" screen on my desktop and a 15" on my laptop and it really makes a difference. You can get a laptop with a 17" screen, it will just set you back a bit more in cash outlay.

So ask yourself these questions:

Do I mainly use my computer at home or do I need it at work or school?

Do I travel a lot?

Will I use the laptop?

Am I willing to pay more for the convenience?
